Saturday,
August 2nd Women's
Bluegrass Festival The
Green Room The Band: Skye will be appearing with Lewi Longmire and the Stumptown Sparrows from 9:45 - 10:45pm on the Backporch Stage: "Lewi Longmire is a guitar slinger and music enthusiast of the highest order. Here he shares his love for community organizing as he accompanies vocalists, not known for their roots work. Jenn Dashney (from big band powerhouse Grooveyard), indie popster Morgan Grace, folk-rocker Skye Pixton and piano songstress Katie Crash will co-create with Longmire as they dabble in Americana - interpreting old standards or reimagining their own originals through an "O Sister" lens. More about the evening and other acts below: Fourteen female-fronted bluegrass/roots-influenced acts (seven each night) perform on two continuous stages - the electric Bar Room Stage inside, and the all acoustic Back Porch Stage outside. The performers are donating their talents to benefit women and children escaping domestic violence. The recent quintuple-platinum sales (over 23 million copies) of the album "O Brother Where Art Thou?" sent plain notice that this archaic American musical form is more authentic than anything American Idol has to offer. Locally, promoters of the Daisychain Music Fair (Oregon's largest female-fronted event) noted the overwhelming popularity of their roots/folk/bluegrass nights. That observation became the genesis for this smaller, but similarly spirited event that earned rave reviews at last years debut. From returning Willamette Valley bluegrass-pop stars The Severin Sisters, to Portland's "Honky Tonk" angel Little Sue, to the Old Time audacity of The Flat Mountain Girls, and the Lewi Longmire-fueled guest star gal-group The Stumptown Sparrows, this event demonstrates how female artists are taking the "O Sister" concept and doing it for themselves.
